Yang was born in Yancheng City, Jiangsu Province, China. He earned his B.S. degree in Bioengineering from Jiangnan University in 2014 and subsequently obtained his Ph.D. degree in Fermentation Engineering from the same institution in 2020. Currently, he serves as an Associate Professor at the School of Food and Pharmaceutical Engineering at Nanjing Normal University, a position he attained in 2020. His primary research focuses on the synthesis of natural products using yeast, particularly aromatic compounds and terpenoids, as well as the design of dynamic regulatory tools.

In 2025, he joined MIT as a visiting scholar in the Stephanopoulos Lab. Currently, he is involved in a project aimed at optimizing engineered Yarrowia lipolytica to enhance carotenoid production.
